Course Presentation

The degreee in Bioinformatics will provide a diversified and balanced training program in the multidisciplinary field of bioinformatics with the main goal of training highly qualified professionals that combine: A good understanding of biology and life sciences; a good theoretical background in mathematics and computer science; and the development of strong practical skills applying technological and methodological tools to solve complex problems such as the processing and analysis of large dataset, and the modelling of biological phenomena. The theoretical training provided aims to prepare students to work on research and academic environments, the focus on practical work and hands on learning will allow students to integrate either academic or industry teams in an immediately productive fashion.

Profile of the Programme and Level of Qualification

3 (three) years, 6 (six) semesters, 38 weeks of full-time study per academic year, 180 ECTS.
University higher education – Level 6 (National Ranking of Qualifications, Decree 782/2009 28th July). The licentiate’s degree allows access to 2nd Cycle studies, according to the conditions stated by NARIC (National Academic Recognition Information Center).

Key Learning Outcomes

1. Develop an autonomous, responsible, critic and ethic professional conduct.
2. Understand and integrate the biological concepts required to the implementation of bioinformatics research
3. Master the methods of statistical analysis of experimental data and the interpretation of the obtained results.
4. Understand the fundamentals of design, project, execution of scientific research.
5. Understand and effectively apply the studied tools, methods and technologies.
6. To develop a critical thinking to analyze the available methods and tools, which allows a rigorous assessment
of their qualities, limitations and scope of application.
7. Master the design, development and operation process of a real world informatics system.
8. Communicate in a clear and professional way the conclusion of the research as well as its theoretical and methodological assumptions.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

Any citizen over 23 years old who does not have the secondary education diploma (12th grade) can attempt to gain admission to a limited number of vacant places available, through special examination which includes an interview (Decree law: Decreto-Lei 64/2006, de 21 de Março).

In accordance with the current legislation (Portaria 401/2007, of Abril 5th and Decreto Lei 64/2006, of March 21st) ISPA recognizes and credits skills acquired in professional and other contexts for academic purposes.

Access to Further Study

The licentiate’s degree allows access to 2nd Cycle studies, according to the conditions stated by NARIC (National Academic Recognition Information Center).

Graduation Requirements

To graduate the student must complete the 180 ECTS successfully.
